Nature-Based Solutions (Nbs), Forest Governance & REDD+ Projects Development Training

Course Overview

Fragmenting conservation, forestry, biodiversity, and ecosystem planning across four small courses dilutes market focus. This single, comprehensive curriculum provides practical execution tools for designing, governing, and financing natural ecosystems to generate verified environmental and economic returns.

Today’s organizations demand climate action that is justified and scalable. Whether you are tasked with protecting infrastructure, ensuring water supply, or enhancing urban cooling, leaders expect clear evidence of how interventions reduce risk. Nature-based solutions offer a pathway to achieve these outcomes effectively. This course offers a comprehensive toolkit for transforming NbS from concepts into practical, decision-making frameworks. You’ll learn to identify climate risks, select suitable NbS options, and design interventions that are implementable and measurable. Through hands-on exercises, you’ll develop concept notes, risk logic, indicators, and stakeholder-ready business cases. Equip yourself to communicate your decisions with clarity and confidence.

This course equips you to design, justify, and implement nature-based solutions that measurably reduce climate risk and strengthen resilience.

By the end of this course, you’ll be able to:

  • Understand practical NbS concepts and the adaptation problems they solve
  • Identify climate hazards, exposure, and vulnerability in real project contexts
  • Select appropriate NbS options for floods, heat, drought, erosion, and water stress
  • Develop implementable NbS designs with safeguards, stakeholders, and operations plans
  • Estimate costs, benefits, and co-benefits using practical value-for-money thinking
  • Build strong NbS project justifications aligned to donor, government, and corporate requirements
  • Define measurable indicators and build a monitoring, evaluation, and learning (MEL) plan
  • Communicate and defend NbS decisions with clarity, evidence, and stakeholder alignment

This course is crafted for professionals across sectors who are responsible for planning and executing climate adaptation projects.

This course is designed for:

  • Climate adaptation and resilience officers
  • Program and project managers implementing climate-sensitive projects
  • Government staff in environment, water, agriculture, lands, or infrastructure
  • NGO leaders prioritizing community resilience investments
  • Donor-funded project teams and grant/program officers
  • Urban planners and county/municipal technical teams
  • CSR/ESG and sustainability professionals
  • DRR and humanitarian staff transitioning to resilience programming
  • Private sector leaders managing climate risk to assets and operations
  • Consultants supporting adaptation planning, design, and evaluation

When you can translate ecosystems into risk reduction and measurable outcomes, you become the person leaders trust with adaptation decisions.

As a participant, you will benefit by:

  • Improving your ability to design adaptation projects that are fundable and implementable
  • Building confidence in justifying NbS investments using evidence and value-for-money logic
  • Strengthening your skills in climate risk screening and resilience-focused planning
  • Gaining practical templates for project design, budgeting, and business case development
  • Increasing your credibility with donors, regulators, technical teams, and communities
  • Enhancing your leadership in ESG, sustainability, and climate resilience roles
  • Positioning yourself as a results-focused practitioner who can deliver measurable adaptation outcomes Organizations that apply nature-based solutions strategically reduce climate losses, protect assets, and build resilience that lasts.

Your Institution/organization will benefit from:

  • Smarter use of budgets through long-term risk reduction, not repeated emergency spends
  • Stronger project justification and approval success for climate adaptation investments
  • Better alignment of adaptation projects with national plans, donor priorities, and ESG goals
  • Reduced exposure to floods, heat impacts, drought losses, and ecosystem degradation
  • Increased community buy-in and long-term sustainability of interventions
  • Clearer monitoring and reporting for audits, evaluations, and climate finance requirements
  • Stronger cross-team collaboration between technical, finance, and stakeholder groups

Training Methodology

This is a practical, outcome-driven course designed to turn NbS concepts into implementation-ready adaptation projects.

Methodology includes:

  • Climate risk and vulnerability mapping exercises using real scenarios
  • NbS option selection workshops for different hazards and sectors
  • Simple project costing and value-for-money exercises
  • Case studies from urban, watershed, coastal, and agricultural contexts
  • Group work to build an NbS concept note and results framework
  • Role-playing stakeholder consultations and approval panels
  • Tools, templates, and checklists participants can reuse immediately
  • Reflection prompts that challenge current “adaptation habits” and decision shortcuts

Module 1: Foundations for Nature-Based Solutions (Nbs) for Adaptation

  • What Nature-Based Solutions mean in practice for adaptation teams
  • The adaptation problems NbS solves: floods, heat, drought, erosion, water stress
  • NbS vs. grey infrastructure: how to position the choice credibly
  • Principles of good NbS design: effectiveness, sustainability, equity, safeguards
  • Exercise: identify 3 adaptation challenges in your context and map possible NbS responses

Module 2: Climate Risk Basics for Decision Makers

  • Understanding hazard, exposure, vulnerability, and risk in simple terms
  • Reading climate information without getting stuck in technical climate science
  • Climate risk screening for projects: what you must ask before you design
  • Connecting risk to assets, services, livelihoods, and operations
  • Exercise: build a basic climate risk statement for a real or simulated project

Module 3: Nbs Typologies and Intervention Options

  • Watershed and catchment restoration for water security and flood moderation
  • Urban green infrastructure for heat reduction and stormwater control
  • Coastal and riverine buffers for erosion and flood protection
  • Agroforestry and climate-smart landscapes for drought resilience
  • Exercise: match NbS options to hazards and sectors using a decision matrix

Module 4: Site Assessment and Fertility for Nbs Projects

  • What to assess: ecology, land use, tenure, community dynamics, governance
  • Constraints that break projects: maintenance, enforcement, incentives, conflict
  • Stakeholder mapping and early engagement that prevents later resistance
  • Feasibility questions donors and approvers will ask
  • Exercise: create a feasibility checklist and apply it to a chosen NbS concept

Module 5: Designing Nbs Interventions that Actually Work

  • Translating NbS ideas into implementable designs and activities
  • Defining scope, boundaries, timelines, roles, and operations plans
  • Safeguards: biodiversity, social inclusion, do-no-harm, land and livelihoods impacts
  • Hybrid solutions: combining NbS and grey infrastructure responsibly
  • Exercise: draft an NbS intervention design sheet with activities, roles, and assumptions

Module 6: Costing and Budgeting for Nbs Implementation
